Choose your Netbook

So if you want a cheap netbook, what compromises can be made when choosing your mini netbook?

Processor

Most netbooks coming onto the market now have the Atom processor, but if your budget is really tight you can still find Pre-Atom netbooks that run the Intel Celeron processor; only go down this route though if you really can’t afford the Atom. The Atom processor can support 1, or 2GB of memory giving you a significant performance boost. Less memory always equals less performance.

Operating system

Most netbooks now provide Windows XP home, but Linux is cheaper. Are you comfortable without Windows? Can you adjust to another operating system? If you are keen to use Microsoft applications, or have a stash of their software already, you will need a Windows netbook. On the other hand there are lots of free, good, applications for Linux.  This really is down to personal preference.

SSD v Hard Drive

If you are considering an SSD look at the write speed; the cheaper options can be relatively slow. SSD’s are more durable than hard drives as they have no moving parts.  On the other hand hard drives have a much larger capacity.  Again you need to consider your priorities.

Screen

A 7 inch screen is a bit too small, and all the latest models tend to be 10.1 or 10.2 inch. Another thing to consider is whether the net book has an antiglare screen. This can be useful for commuting; for example, in brightly lit trains and airport terminals.

Keyboard

Do you touch type? If so you will probably want a 90 percent sized keyboard (10 inch screen) with a bit more space.  When touchscreen netbooks take off this might not be such an issue.

Battery

Low-spec netbooks have three-cell batteries, and higher-spec netbooks are six-cell. The problem with the 3 cells is that the maximum battery life on a single charge seems to be around the 3 hour mark; not so good on a long haul flight. So if you travel you probably want the six-cell netbook.  Of course a bigger battery will be heavier so only get one if you really will be using the netbook on the move.
